Tricia O’Neill, deputy head teacher of Troqueer primary, is taking her skills and years of experience to Africa in a bid to improve education there…The trip is part of a 15-month Global Teachers Programme (GTP) which sees Scottish teachers and headteachers with a challenging, rewarding and motivating experience…'This is a huge personal and professional challenge for me. I will be going back to the basics of teaching. That is working without the photocopier and the phone and the computer…The teaching system used is TALULAR — teaching and learning using locally available resources. In other words, using sticks and bottle tops instead of the bright colourful blocks. It’s using whatever you can find as a teaching tool…The school has 1,200 pupils and 14 teachers, only six of which are trained.' Source: Dumfries and Galloway Standard, 24 May 2007.
